Reflection

Throughout my experiences, I have learned to consider perspectives beyond my own. Growing up in Venezuela and studying in the United States exposed me to different realities and cultural viewpoints that fundamentally changed how I approach problems.

My work in Kenya and involvement with diverse communities at FIU reinforced the importance of understanding context when solving problems. A technical solution that works in one environment may fail entirely in another. This is often not because the technology is flawed, but because the cultural and social context was not considered.

This perspective has made me a more thoughtful engineer and a more empathetic collaborator.

I developed a deeper understanding of how global issues are interconnected, particularly in education, technology, and accessibility. Problems in one part of the world rarely exist in isolation; they are tied to larger systems of inequality, access, and historical context.

Events such as discussions on mental health in minority communities, the global impact of tourism, and the ethics of innovation expanded my awareness of these systems. I began to see how my field, computer science, touches nearly every domain of human life, for better or worse.

This awareness has become a guiding principle in how I approach my work. I ask not just "Does this work?" but also "Who does this serve, and who might it leave behind?"

My experiences have motivated me to actively contribute to solving global challenges. Through teaching K-12 students through Code/Art, leading technical teams, and volunteering at the Gihon Women Empowerment Center in Kenya, I have taken concrete steps to translate awareness into action.

Through teaching, leadership, and technical projects, I have worked to create meaningful impact that extends beyond the classroom. Each experience has deepened my commitment to using my skills in service of communities that are too often underrepresented in technology spaces.

Engagement, for me, is not just participation; it is accountability. It means showing up, listening, and allowing the needs of communities to shape the direction of my work.
